BOOK

Many years ago whilst reading the Tao Te Ching I realised that the cup of tea I held in my hand was more than just an habitual thirst quencher. As Lao Tzu’s calm verses worked their magic upon me – and the tea’s subtle stimulus embraced me – I became aware that rather than being merely a prosaic cuppa, tea drinking was one of humanity’s most noble practices.

The epiphany got me thinking – and exploring. Tea transcends borders and nationalities. Cup-by-cup, infusion-by-infusion every country that tea has touched over its 5,000-year-history has embraced this ancient leaf. Complex rituals and cultural traditions have grown up around it and its presence has brought together ancient philosophies and fireside chats. It has united young and old and has breached divisions between rich and poor and the powerless and the powerful. Tea has and always will be an occasion for friendship for each new generation – it offers us an opportunity for shared moments of intimacy. It enables us to reflect, to be inspired and to create. Tea is a way of life.

In 2007 I co-founded the Tea Appreciation Society, with designer Stephen Nelson, in celebration of the humble cup of tea and it’s symbiotic relationship with the creative human spirit.

I have embarked on writing a book that expresses my love of the increasingly popular, ever-more relevant and eternally refreshing leaf and it’s influence on creativity.

I am grateful to Clive Wilson of Harris & Wilson, Alex & Ross of A-Side Design, and Elizabeth Hallett of Saltyard, without whom this project would still be lurking in the dusty recesses of my mind.

I am currently exploring options for this book with publishers.

~ Shayne House, co-founder and director of the Tea Appreciation Society.
