The Price of a Cup of Coffee

The price of a cup of coffee. That’s one estimate of what it will cost each of us every day for the next 20 years to break the fossil fuel habit of generations and turn to renewables instead.

To prevent dangerous climate change, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere need to be cut by 80 per cent by the middle of the century – and that’s relative to 1990 levels.

The UN says the renewable energy that can already be harnessed economically would supply the world’s electricity needs 15 times over. As yet only a tiny proportion of energy is generated this way, but replace existing coal, gas and oil-fired power stations with renewables and you achieve a colossal environmental win.

One long standing-objection to renewables – that wave and sun power can never be relied on for a steady supply, day in day out – is vanishing too as new ways to store energy are rolled out. The nuclear industry can no longer sell itself as the only reliable source of low-carbon baseload electricity.

It’s interesting to note that the Texan oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens wants to build the worlds biggest wind farm in Texas.

Our first few batches of T shirts that we had printed were all made from organic cotton, we’ve had some made from quick growing renewable bamboo too.

Time goes by and we work hard to control our supply chain, now all the T shirts we print are climate neutral, which means the industrial greenhouse gas emissions used in producing them have been reduced to pre-industrial levels, this is achieved through low-impact (low emission) organic agriculture and carbon neutral industrial manufacturing, this is possible by substituting energy use from fossil fuel powered power stations (grey electricity) with clean renewable ‘green’ energy from wind turbines and solar power.

The wind turbines generate renewable (green) electricity for the industrial manufacturing, while solar power is used to pre-heat the water used in the dyeing and finishing processes.

Our clothing is climate neutral, not carbon neutral, because we hope to reduce our carbon emissions per garment by up to 80-85%, compared to emissions generated by the manufacture of conventional cotton garments. A reduction of 80-85% is in balance with the environment.

Guardian readers chose Iain’s articles as the best of the year in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Before turning to writing he pretended to work in an unemployment benefit office, but actually spent four hours a day playing cards and drafting the world’s first satirical revolutionary economics newsletter. He is the inventor of ‘World Phone in Sick Day’, and also initiated the annual London Santacon: a gathering of hundreds of Santas intent on festive mayhem. These events have been the subject of documentaries by Channel 4 (which saw the Daily Mirror calling for his imprisonment) and BBC Radio 4 respectively. Road Of Broken Dreams Free Download

That’s right, 5 tracks, all the artwork and even a press release for The Road of Broken Dreams CD tribute to Nikki Sudden are all waiting for you now at www.biguntidy.com/nikki and it’s all a gift to you.

As Big Untidy’s own Clive Product puts it: “Nikki Sudden had many friends. Hundreds it seems. As many friends as he had songs. Many fellow musicians and non-musicians in Berlin seem to have a Nikki connection. Maybe they had been in one of his many band line-ups, or they had supported him, or they had been a fan, a friend, or a drinking buddy. And now, with Nikki some two and a half years gone, it is difficult to write or talk about Nikki without smiling. Nikki seemed so full of life and with stories to tell.”

The CD includes contributions from Martti Mäkellä and his Trash Lounge (from Finland via Fürth), Clark Nova (from Berlin), and Grae J Wall and Clive Product, along with The Gentlemen Of Leisure. “It´s lo-fi, sure, but it´s lo-fi with love. We hope it keeps the flame alive. Hope that you like it.”

Both Mäkellä and his Trash Lounge with special guest Laura Ryhaenen from Finnish Tango group Uusikuu and Grae J Wall will be playing at the Big Untidy Night Out tonight in Reading’s Rising Sun Arts Institute, along with Bidgie Reef and Robert Hokum and I dare say there’ll be a few tracks from The Road of Broken Dreams getting an airing.

The Road of Broken Dreams is available in association with our friends at Trashville and 9pm records and is the first of several Download CDs Big Untidy will make available – coming next month Jason Smart ‘Flowers Trees Trains and Knees’ and don’t forget Darrell Mitchell live at The Rising Sun is available to buy at all Darrell’s gigs.

A Call To All Society Members

Tea Appreciation Society’s very own Susie Clarke has entered the T4 music competition Orange unsigned Act! (previously known as TMobileAct Unsigned).

Following on from Susies initiation into the world of tv via the MTV show earlier this year she is pretty well prepared now to go for the big one! And this one really is big and scary; it’s mainstream television so the exposure is HUGE and the prize is a bona fide record contract with Universal.

The 25 acts with the most votes are eligible to audition to take part. As you can imagine competition is massive for a place, literally thousands upon thousands of acts have entered so Susie really is up against it, but as she admits, you’ve got to give it a go!

This is where we all come in, everyone’s help is needed.

Please sign up as a fan to vote (don’t be put off, they won’t spam you)
1) go to http://orangeunsignedact.co.uk/acts/susieclarke
2) Click sign up to vote
3) Confirm your registration
4) Vote for Susie Clarke! Once a day, every day until 14th September.

p.s. you’re allowed to vote 3 times a day, and each vote has to go to a different act, so if you’re a fan of other acts in the competition you won’t have to choose your loyalty, which is nice :-)

Please show your support for Susie and help her get that record contract.

Organic Fortnight

During Soil Association Organic Fortnight, people across Britain will be celebrating all things organic. From 6-21 September, individuals, businesses and communities will be hosting events to raise awareness of the environmental, health and social benefits of organic production.

Not only that, but the campaign gives everyone a chance to enjoy organic products from delicious food and drink to beauty and textiles.

The fortnight kicks off with the Soil Association Organic Food Festival, Europe’s largest organic celebration, which takes place in Bristol on 6-7 September.

The campaign closes on a high with the Soil Association Scotland’s Organic Food Festival on 20-21 September.

Bark

The best way by far to rise in the morning is with a lovely hot assam, crumpets go well too, or some honey on toast, but if you’re feeling slightly less misogynistic I recommend settling down with the latest edition of Bark, a pamphlet of some comedic distinction.

Bark is the UK’s premier pamphlet. Bark appears infrequently, when you most need it, the arrows in your quiver as you battle with the twits. A cover price of £1.25 enables Bark to keep their biscuit choices open as they craft. Would you begrudge them a better quality dunk? I certainly wouldn’t…
If you fancy a portion, send them a message on MySpace and they’ll see you right through your letter box, as it were. Nifty.

Pamphlet is not a dirty word.

Koala Attack

I spent last night in the studio with Punk band Koala Attack, playing trumpet on one of their tracks.

I hadn’t played for a while but the whole creative process really fired me up.

A great bunch of guys, but they’re a bit shy on the tea making front, their music and enthusiasm more than makes up for it.

Check them out at

More tracks being added soon and an album to follow.
